President: Lou Hoffman

Lou Hoffman Louis “Lou” Hoffman is the Chapter President, senior officer of the chapter.

 

Lou is a career Army Officer who retired at the grade of Lieutenant Colonel. Lou is one of the first members to be inducted into the Special Forces Branch as an 18A when it became a separate branch by General Orders No. 35 on June 19, 1987.

 

Lou’s military specialties include Special Forces, Infantry, and Military Intelligence (Electronic Warfare).

 

Lou’s early military assignments with Special Forces include Special Forces A Team Executive Officer, ODA 533, Co C, 1st Bn, 5th SFG (Airborne); Special Forces A Team Leader, ODA, 533, Co C, 1st Bn, 5th SFG (Airborne); and Battalion Operations Officer and 1st Bn, 5th SFG (Airborne).

 

Lou’s later military assignments with Special Forces include Special Forces Special Access Program Manager, Army Staff (Pentagon) and Special Forces Plans and Operations Officer, Office of the Secretary of Defense (Pentagon).

 

Lou graduated from the United States Army Special Forces Officer Qualification Course on 9 April 1979.

 

Lou is the founder and 1st Chapter President of the National Capitol Region Chapter (NCR), 1st Cavalry Division Association, Washington D.C.

 

Lou deployed from May 2005 to June 2006 to Afghanistan where he served as a Senior Mentor to the Afghanistan Ministry of Defense, the Afghanistan Army General Staff, and the Afghanistan National Army.

 

Lou’s civilian education includes a Masters in Public Administration, Troy University (Justice Administration & National Strategic Affairs); Masters in Procurement and Acquisitions Management, Webster University; Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Widener University; and an Associates Degree in Business Management from Middlesex County College.

 

Lou currently serves with the Department of the Army as a Program Manager within the Army’s Acquisition, Logistics and Technology (AL&T) Workforce. Lou has over ten years of DOD and Army acquisition experience and is certified in Program Management and Test and Evaluation.

 

Lou is married to his college sweetheart Kathy and they have two daughters and one grandson.

 


 

Secretary: John Ferry

John Ferry John Ferry is the Chapter Secretary, handling chapter communications via web, social media and paper mediums.

 

John Ferry enlisted in the Army in 2003 and attended basic training and Airborne School at Fort Bragg North Carolina. He then attended Special Forces assessment and Selection and enrolled in the Special Forces Qualification Course, graduating in 2006. John was then assigned the Bravo Company, Second Battalion of Twentieth Special Forces Group as a junior weapons Sergeant. John deployed to Afghanistan with Bravo Company from 2009 to 2010. John recently graduated from the Maryland National Guard Officer Candidate School and will be taking command of a Long Range Surveillance Detachment.

 

John has worked in several military sectors. He is currently a consultant for Department of the Army as a budget analyst. Previously John worked for the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) as a New Equipment Training Integrator and the Integrated Processes Team Support Manager. John also worked for Army Test and Evaluation Command as a Test and Evaluation analyst.

 

John is married with three children and is currently enrolled in American Military University Pursuant of a Bachelors of Art in Business Administration.


Treasurer: E. John Mohler

John Mohler John Mohler is the Chapter Treasurer, handling chapter finances, bank account, and membership applications.

 

John Mohler enlisted in the Army in late 1963 and attended Basic Training at Fort Dix, Artillery School at Fort Sill, Advanced Infantry and Airborne Schools at Fort Benning, German and Russian School at the Defense Language Institute. He then served with the 25th Infantry Division in Viet Nam for multiple tours of duty during the period of August 1965-December 1970, where he was nominated for a Field Commission in 1970. After recuperation from injuries, and at the age of 29, he then attended Airborne School a second time to re-qualify for jump status in 1972, followed by attendance at the Special Forces Qualification Course in 1973. John subsequently served with the 7th, 11th and 12th Special Forces Groups. He subsequently retired from the Army reserve in 1988 after 25 years of active, National Guard and Army Reserve service.

 

John has worked in the Aerospace Sector for several major defense related firms, to include Boeing, Deutsche Aerospace, Messerschmitt, General Electric Aerospace, General Dynamics, Booz Allen & Hamilton, and Lockheed Martin. He is currently a consultant with the Nemacolin Business Group, providing Turnaround and Improvement consulting for small to medium-sized businesses, and non-profit organizations. He also leads the initiative “In The Company of Great People” that shares the stories and amazing talents of Great People with whom we have all served.

 

John is married with two sons and 6 grandchildren.


Chaplain: Gene Russell

Gene Russell Gene Russell is the Chapter Chaplain, responsible for contacting and visiting chapter members in hospital or at home. He leads the outreach to visiting Wounded Warriors in the Greater Washington D.C. area.

 

Gene, was commissioned in 1961 and following his commission he graduated from the Infantry Officers' Basic Course, Airborne School. After an assignment with the 5th Division, where he was a Platoon Leader, Weapons Platoon Leader and Infantry Company Commander, he graduated from the SF Qualification Course at Fort Bragg North Carolina in 1964. He was assigned to the 7th Group and then served in the 5th Group in 1965-66. He served on B-22 and took command of A-224 from fellow Chapter member Linc German. Following Vietnam, Gene taught Infantry/Special Forces operations at Fort Sill and on a ROTC assignment. He also served an exchange tour with the British Army and in 1980 took Command of the 3d Bn 7th Special Forces in Panama. During the 2.5 years in command, the battalion deployed elements to support the El Salvadorian Counterinsurgency, and various CT/CD activities in Latin American. He returned to the States and held SF assignments on the Army Staff and ran the action to form the 3d BN 75th Rangers and the Regimental Headquarters. Later he served on the Joint Staff in the Joint Special Operations Agency and was the head of the Task Force that implemented the Congressional Legislation that formed the U.S. Special Operations Command. He retired in 1987. Following his military career, Gene worked in Special Operations, CT, CD activities as a contractor and supported the Department of Veterans Affairs up-grade their HR technologies. As a consultant he continued in these areas and in the area of the IED threat. He is currently the Executive Director of the National War College and he and his lovely wife are very active in supporting our Wounded Warriors and their families. Gene graduated from The Ohio State University, received his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and is a graduate of the National War College.

 

Gene is married to Sharon and they have two daughters and two granddaughters.


 

President Emeritus: Charlie Norton

Charlie Norton Charles W. Norton, Jr.

Colonel US Army Retired

 

 

Charles Was an original member of Special Forces, a founding member of Chapter XI. Went from Private in 1944 to Colonel in 1973. Served at all levels of Special Forces, ending as Commander of the 7th SFG and then Deputy Commander of the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center.

 

Charles Retired in 1981 and returned to McLean with his wife, Virginia.
